* Recently, a prospective Hyundai Genesis Coupe owner reached out to us to ask about what’s available for Genesis Coupe 2.0T Upgrades. While the power options with the 2.0T aren’t as plentiful as the 3.8, that’s not to say that you can’t beef up the output of the 2.0T with a few simple bolt ons.

hyundais002 Up front, you should probably be aware that For the Genesis 2.0T, ECU tuning options are just now becoming readily available for the 2.0T market and we hope to have a supplier for such a thing soon, but ECU tuning should unlock a modest bit of power from these motors - some early tuners have taken a Stage I car from 230whp to 280whp and torque increased from 204wtq to 322wtq… so that’s certainly promising, to say the least. But to have those sort of gains, you need to keep in mind that you MUST* have the supporting hardware to back it up - supporting Stage I mods typically includes Intake, Downpipe and FMIC.

New to the market is the Turbo Transformer Performance Module for Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T, a simple piggy-back type device for just $199 that safely increases boost pressure slightly for a safe gain of approximately 25whp and 25wtq! While nowhere near as complex as a OBD II based tuner, this piggy-back device installs and can be removed literally in under a minute and offers a nice gain for the price.

Featuring a microcontroller instead of a resistor like the so-called “chips” that used to be around on the internet, the Turbo Transformer is the genuine article, and digitally alters MAP sensor output only after exceeding 12psi of boost. Your ECU will see that extra boost on the MAP sensor and then call for the appropriate target lambda and spark values to provide a nice increase in power and boost without breaking the bank. Scope out the dyno results below and see for yourself.

For basically everything else, parts are pretty easy to come by. ARK Performance makes a TON of products for the Genesis Coupe and they’re quite well made, and are actually local to Southern California, not too far from us.

ARK has a very close relationship with Hyundai and Kia, so there’s widebody kits, exhausts, downpipes, all kinds of suspension available from a wide variety of suppliers and the car uses a common bolt pattern, so wheels are easy to come by - you can pick and choose from almost any wheel manufacturer, and we can get almost any wheels for Genesis Coupe here at ModBargains.

It’s worth noting that ARK is who makes those cool Wing Emblems for Genesis Coupe.

For Genesis Coupe Suspension and Genesis Coupe Exterior upgrades, you have a huge selection; don’t even worry about it because you’ve got headlights, tail lights, widebody kits, all kinds of suspension from simple drop springs to coilovers to chassis bracing - all of that is readily available. Here at ModBargains alone you’ve got your choice of BC Racing, CKS, Eibach, KW, RS-R and ST Suspensions Coilovers to choose from, Genesis Coupe Air Suspension from AirREX, lowering springs from Eibach & H&R and all sorts of other upgrades from Cusco.

Exhaust Options for Genesis Coupe 2.0T

For a turbocharged car, generally speaking, you’ll get the most power out of a downpipe (more than an exhaust), intercooler and ECU tune, along with a performance intake. An exhaust is often optional if you’ve got a performance downpipe, but a proper exhaust does sound good and with the right tips, can really set off the look of a car.

Yes, replacing the exhaust system with a “catback” or “turboback” exhaust  makes more power, but remember, with increased noise level, you have more potential to draw… shall we say, “unwanted” attention from the neighbors and nearby Crown Victorias, if you follow my meaning. Be sure to listen to sound clips and videos to ensure you like what you hear.

That said, ARK Performance, as I mentioned, makes a great exhaust for the Genesis Coupe, and we also proudly offer Injen and Magnaflow Cat Back Exhausts for Genesis Coupe 2.0T, which are also great choices.

The intercooler, by increasing it in size (thereby increasing its volume), is able to stay cool for a longer period of time, reducing detonation (which also helps preserve your engine), lower air charge temps mean the car’s engine makes the most power possible rather than bogging down in the heat.

A stock intercooler compared to an aftermarket intercooler.

Even after just a few back-to-back pulls on the dyno, as the car starts to get saturated with heat (a term called “heat soak”), it starts making less and less power… for instance AWE Tuning’s B8 Audi S5 lost 25whp after 8 back to back pulls, leading them to develop the ColdFront cooling system for significant power gains. Improving the car’s cooling capability (by fitting a larger intercooler) will help prevent that power loss. Mishimoto recently launched two intercooler options for the Genesis Coupe 2.0T; a Street Edition Front Mount Intercooler for Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T for those on a budget pushing just a bit more power than stock, and a RACE Edition Front Mount Intercooler Kit for Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T, which features a larger J-Line intercooler, capable of supporting up to 500whp, which is more than enough for the Fastest Genesis Coupe 2.0T in the world.

Mind you, when it gets super hot out the intercooler can only cool to about as hot as the air outside without doing something like a air-to-water intercooler (complex) or methanol injection setup - or adding a water sprayer over the existing intercooler (this is kind of ghetto, but it is an effective trick used by road racers - saw it in an old issue of Turbo- a mag that’s now out of print). Increasing your cooling capacity- as well as the elimination of flimsy plastic endtanks - makes the Koyorad HD Radiator for Genesis Coupe an especially appealing option to keep the car cool to make optimal power reliably and consistently.

Then there’s the downpipe for Genesis Coupe 2.0T. The downpipe is often the single biggest point of restriction on a turbo car. The OEM cat is incredibly restrictive and typically integrated directly into the downpipe, so a catless downpipe will yield the most power, but will be louder, and might sometimes smell like unburnt fuel. However, most of the gain from a performance downpipe comes from a performance tune that takes advantage of the enhanced exhaust flow… and a catless downpipe, without a tune, will cause a Check Engine Light. However, you can either get a tune to eliminate CEL, get O2 spacers to eliminate CEL or get a CEL eliminator module. That said, without tune, the downpipe will yield at least 7whp.

A catted downpipe is going to cost more and will produce slightly less power, but is less likely to set a CEL  - but some catted downpipes can be run without causing a CEL. A downpipe with a catalytic converter costs more because of the expensive materials that a catalytic converter is made of - like titanium, platinum and other expensive rare metals.  On the downside, there are not currently any catted downpipes on the market that we’re aware of, CARB certified which could make SMOG or emissions difficult if the car has to smog within a few years. Consider all these things carefully when choosing a Downpipe for Genesis Coupe 2.0T.

Then there’s your intake. A performance intake for Genesis Coupe 2.0T will definitely sharpen throttle response and you’ll hear a whole lot more turbo noise - you’ll hear it spool and you’ll even probably hear a little “blow-off-valve”like noise (boost pressure valve) too.

Before we get to the filter, the actual intake tube itself - if streamlined for performance - will yield more power regardless of whatever way the air cleaner at the end is configured. By this same token, the “Hotside” and “Coldside” “Chargepipes”, which are the sections of tube that connect the intercooler to the turbocharger (hot side) and throttle body (cold side).

A short ram intake with the filter right on the end without a lot of heat shielding that doesn’t significantly relocate the intake to a cooler area - ex, a cone filter and tube to the throttle body - will likely be sucking in extra hot air under the hood. Remember what we said earlier about Air Charge temperature, and how hotter air will make less power? Yup, that again. A short ram intake, when paired with a heat shield that insulates the filter from the hot air in the engine bay will make more power and make it much more consistently.

These performance intakes feature heat shielding and air ducts designed to draw in the coolest air possible, usually paired with a tuned intake tube. This style of intake will make the most power the most consistently, because it will consistently be drawing in a cooler air charge but with a much higher flow rate than the OEM filter.
